Daily sign-in and sign-out sheet
One row per child: the time they arrived and left, who brought them, who collected them, and a signature. It covers what New Jersey, Maine, Texas and California ask an attendance record to hold.

Signatures in full where California applies (22 CCR §101229.1). Keep the sheets as long as your state asks: Maine says three years.
What the rules ask for
- New Jersey (N.J.A.C. 3A:52-4.5(b)2.ii)“Maintenance of children's daily attendance records, including the daily time of arrival and departure”
- Maine (10-148 CMR Ch. 32, §5(A)(2))“All attendance records must include date, year, start and end time of daily attendance for each group of Children. The list must be available for inspection by the Department and be kept on site for three years.”
- Texas (26 TAC §746.631(a))“This tracking system must include the name of each child; the date, time of arrival, and time of departure; and the employee or parent's initials or other unique identifier code.”
- California (22 CCR §101229.1(a)(1), (b))“The person who signs the child in/out shall use his/her full legal signature and shall record the time of day. ... The person who brings the child to, and removes the child from, the center shall sign the child in/out.”
New Jersey and Maine ask for the times, not a signature. A signature column costs nothing and answers the question of who collected a child, which every state's release rules care about.
Or sign in at the door, on a phone
In Farlow, families check in at a tablet kiosk, a QR code on the wall or a door code. Only adults on the pickup list can sign a child out, and the attendance sheet records who did it and when.
